Campaign finance reform is the common term most used for the political effort to change the involvement of money in political campaigns. Although, attempts to regulate campaign finance by legislation date back to 1867, the first successful attempts nationally to regulate and enforce campaign finance originated in the 1971. At that time, the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) required candidates to disclose sources of campaign contributions and expenditure. This Act was amended in 1974 with the introduction of legal limits on contributions. This provision created the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA) of 2002 is the most recent major federal law on campaign finance, which revised some of the legal limits of expenditure set in 1974. This Act attempted to ban unregulated expenditures made by political parties called "soft money"; however, there are many loopholes that must be eliminated if our nation expects to enable and attract the best qualified persons to elected public office.

Bill introduced calling for honest elections

By Ken Lindsay

Democratic senators, Barack Obama of Illinois and Charles Schumer of New York, are introducing a bill today that would make deceiving or intimidating voters a federal crime with substantial penalties. The bill aims at some of the most commonly used deceptive political tactics. The bill also makes it a crime to knowingly tell voters the wrong day for an election.

In the past, there have been reports of organized efforts to use telephones, leaflets or posters to tell voters, especially in minority areas, not to vote on Election Day because voting has been postponed. The bill would criminalize making false claims to voters about who has endorsed a candidate, or wrongly telling people that they cannot vote.

Along with characterizing such crimes, the bill would require the Justice Department to counteract deceptive election information that has been put out, and to report to Congress after each election on what deceptive practices occurred and what the Justice Department did about them. The bill allows individuals to go to court to stop deceptive practices while they are happening. That is important, given how uninterested the current Justice Department has proved to be in cracking down on election-season dirty tricks.

Our Mission

Like most other citizens, we see the unprincipled manner in which our legislative process is conducted. The process is disgusting. in essence, swarms of lobbyists descend like locusts on Washington, demanding special favors in return for campaign contributions. We want to eliminate the need of our elected officials to raise huge amounts of money just to be re-elected. The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 made things a little better.... but .... leaves too many loopholes. As a nation... we deserve better. Click here to read the entire law.

When will the mainstream media get it right? by Jerry Lanson Common Dreams

My New York Times today paints a pretty grim picture of life in Iraq three-plus years into W's war of choice. A graphic compares a variety of statistics this May (2006) to the last three. Other than a slight drop in U.S. military deaths from 77 last May to 68 this year, the graphic's stats are awfully disheartening:

-- Monthly incidents of sectarian violence -- up from 20 to 250
-- Daily insurgent attacks -- up from 70 to 90
 -- Multi-fatality bombings -- up from 36 to 56
-- Iraqi civilian deaths -- up from 1,000 to 1,500
 -- Number of insurgents -- up from 16,000 to 20,000 ....More>>>
